Behavioral Counseling

Understanding Behavior Starts With Understanding Your Pet

Behavior changes can be difficult to navigate, especially when you’re not sure why your pet is acting differently. At East & West Animal Hospital, we take a compassionate, whole-pet approach to behavioral concerns. Our goal is to understand what may be contributing to the behavior and help you develop a practical plan that supports both your pet and your family.

When Behavior Changes, Look at the Whole Picture

Aggression, anxiety, destructive behavior, excessive vocalization, house soiling, and other behavioral concerns can have many possible causes. A pet’s behavior may be influenced by their environment, past experiences, genetics, stress, or even an underlying medical condition.

Our veterinarians begin with an individualized assessment and may recommend diagnostic testing when appropriate. Our in-house laboratory can help us evaluate for certain medical conditions that could be contributing to changes in your pet’s behavior.

Common Behavioral Concerns

We can help evaluate a variety of behavioral issues, including:

  • Anxiety and separation-related behaviors
  • Fear and stress
  • Aggression or reactivity
  • Destructive behaviors
  • Excessive barking or vocalization
  • House soiling
  • Changes in behavior or temperament
  • Compulsive or repetitive behaviors
  • Personalized Behavior Modification

Once we have a better understanding of your pet’s needs, we can work with you on a behavior modification plan. Depending on the situation, this may include positive reinforcement, environmental changes, desensitization, counter-conditioning, and other behavior-management strategies.

When Medication May Help

For some pets, anxiety or other behavioral challenges may benefit from medication as part of a broader treatment plan. If medication is appropriate, our veterinarians can help determine the right approach and monitor your pet’s response.

Compassionate Support for You & Your Pet

Behavior concerns rarely have a simple, one-size-fits-all solution. We’ll work with you without judgment to better understand your pet and create a plan that is realistic, individualized, and focused on improving their quality of life.
